What is Percocet Used For?

Percocet is a brand name for a pill containing oxycodone hydrochloride and acetaminophen. Percocet falls under the class of medicines called opioid analgesics. Percocet 10-325 contains 10 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 mg of acetaminophen.

It is used as a pain-alleviating agent for acute and quick pains ranging from mild to moderate to severe anywhere in the body. It can either be used alone or in combination with other pain alleviating or anti-inflammation agents.

Research have indicated Percocet to be a hazardous factor with liver-related conditions and disorders. It is likely because of acetaminophen because acetaminophen is related to liver-related diseases and conditions.

Liver failure has been shown to occur in patients that consumed over 4000 mg of acetaminophen within a day which may have come from different acetaminophen-containing medications. Hence, people with any pre-existing liver issues need to be extra vigilant about the consumption and dosage of Percocet.

Symptoms and Conditions

Unlike chronic pains, Percocet is more beneficial with quick release for quick acute pains occurring in any part of the whole body. Acetaminophen is a pain-alleviating agent and it being present in a higher quantity i.e 325 mg helps with the relieving of the pain signals and symptoms.

Oxycodone hydrochloride is for relaxation and sedation purposes that help with the rest element. Both of these combined make a good healing agent for acute aches of any severity be it severe or non severe.

Acute short-term aches can show up in any place in the body but joints and muscles are common targets. In case of pain resulting from inflammation in a muscle or joint, Percocet may be prescribed in combination with some anti-inflammation agents.

Because of the presence of the opioid, narcotic oxycodone in it, Percocet should be carefully prescribed and administered.

Because of the dependency and addiction tendencies of opioids/ narcotics, the medications containing these substances are not advised to be prescribed for use longer than a few weeks at a time. Hence, Percocet being for quick release owing to quick pains for shorter periods of time is properly brilliant.

Percocet 10-325 is one of the various dosages the drug is available in. It is also the highest because while the amount of acetaminophen remains the same, the oxycodone hydrochloride varies with dosages of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, and 10 mg.

The dosage should be started at lower levels and can be enhanced over time up to 10-325. This is because of the side effects so that they are not frequent and hazardous. Over time, the patient is likely to develop some tolerance so the dosage can gradually be enhanced to match the needs as per the severity of the patient’s condition and symptoms.

Care should be observed however that the dosage of oxycodone hydrochloride does not exceed 60 mg and the dosage of acetaminophen does not go over 4000 mg per day.

Side Effects

Apart from the obvious dependency and addiction tendencies, there are certain other adverse effects as well associated with the usage of Percocet 10-325. More commonly occurring of these include drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, headache, stomach ache, etc. Some others include shallow breathing, fever, lost appetite, hot flashes, or skin rashes.
